The not-so-obvious reason to shop locally is how much fun it is. Grab a cup of coffee at Cafe Luwak and spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon walking and shopping in Ypsi: you will meet some wonderfully ecentric folk, have the time to notice the Ypsi architecture, and have some great stories to tell your co-workers on Monday! |
|
25
| Chloe Root | 48103 | I pledge to shop locally whenever possible. | With rising rents and a slowing economy, our downtown (and Depot town!) areas are becoming more and more vulnerable to the takeover of chain stores and restaurants, which drain money out of our local economy, have no responsibility to our community and have much less personality than the average local business! I want to preserve the wonderful cultures of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, and even more important, to keep local dollars and resources local! |

|
33
| Candace B. Pinaud | 48198 | I pledge to do 100% of my shopping locally. | It's the only way to keep our money within this community! It's a slippery slope otherwise....shop outside the area for clothes, food and even mortgages ;=) takes money away from the businesses, who then have to close their doors, and then can't afford their homes, then foreclose, then lower property values which makes it so no one can sell their homes or access their equity, etc. etc.
Just give back to our community so we can HAVE on.

| David Zayas | 48197 | I pledge to do 100% of my shopping locally. | As far as importance, I think you've all stated eloquently enough the reasons to shop locally. However, more than anything, I just love the rapport that I build with local shop-owners. To me, that feeling of a loving, symbiotic community means so much because I didn't have an opportunity for it, growing up.
It feels so good to have a personal relationship with owners and employees like Paul from the Rocket, or Jimmy from the Corner Brewery. Also, waiting tables at Haab's, I love knowing my regulars and what they'll want to eat or drink before even visiting their table.
Building and maintaining those little moments shared between customer and vendor is just such a joy, and joy is reason enough to shop local. |
